alt_teleologiesJewish Studies at UC-Santa Cruz is proud to co-sponsor Alternative Teleologies: The Mediterranean and the Modern World(s), A Workshop and Conference, to be held on Saturday, January 17, 2009, from 10am-6pm, at the University of California Santa Cruz in Humanities I 210.

This exciting conference was organized by the Mediterranean Seminar at UC-Santa Cruz. Many of the talks will explore aspects of the Jewish experience in the Mediterranean region, including the construction of a pan-Sephardi identity, the creation of the Donmeh community, and the emergence of diasporic Andalusian musical traditions. Participants who work in Jewish Studies include Marc Baer of UC-Irvine, Daniel Schroeter, of the University of Minnesota, Fred Astren of San Francisco State University, as well as Brian Catlos and Núria Silleras-Fernández, who both teach courses in the Jewish Studies Program at UC-Santa Cruz. Our sponsorship was made possible by a generous grant from the David B. Gold Foundation and was the inaugural event in our ongoing series on Jews in Muslim lands.
